This page describes Dr. Newman's research and scholarly expertise. It includes a selected list of scientific publications (peer-reviewed research) in areas such as psychiatric epidemiology, cultural psychology, and developmental psychopathology. Dr. Newman teaches courses on psychoanalytic and developmental theory of personality and on clinical technique to advanced psychotherapy and psychoanalytic candidates. She supervises post-doctoral and pre-doctoral fellows and medical students. She is active in service with various international, national and local professional organizations in psychology, psychoanalysis, child development, American Indian affairs and mental health.

  • American Indian mental health: culture and identity development, personality development, psychiatric epidemiology and developmental psychopathology. Health disparities in racial and ethnic minority population, indigenous mental health and research methods.
  • Developmental psychopathology: psychoanalysis, epidemiology, neurobiology of attachment and personality development, developmental neuroscience, traumatogenesis, risk, resilience, taxonomy, nosology and co-occuring disorders.
  • Personality development: ego development, psychoanalytic theory, personality diagnosis, emotion regulation, genetics, attachment, and temperament in infancy to adulthood.
